YOUTH WORKER

Kildare Traveller Action is a community development organisation,
working to address issues facing Travellers in the county including,
health, mental health, accommodation, youth, education, cultural and
ethnic identity and human rights. With the support of the Community
Foundation. KTA is delighted to be seeking a dynamic person for the
post of Youth Worker. The Youth Worker will work as part of the team
in supporting the provision of youth work services locally. They will
develop and implement programmes and services that support the work of
KTA with young Travellers. It is expected that the Youth Worker will
engage in direct work with Travellers in the area of youth with a
particular focus on mental health and wellbeing.

THE PURPOSE OF THE POST WILL BE:

* 1.To identify and respond to the needs of targeted young Travellers
aged * - * years
* To plan, develop and deliver youth group programmes to the target
group who are identified through various youth work methodologies.
* To assist young people to successfully participate with the
service in order to enhance their capacity to reach their full
potential.
* To refer on and signpost young people who may be in need of
additional specialised services.
* To represent the issues of Traveller Youth on a range of forums as
relevant
* Support young Travellers to develop and access mental health
information and support

NATURE OF THE POST

This post will be part-time, * hours per week
(to include evening work and Saturdays so flexibility is required).
This position is offered for one year with the possibility of
extension subject to funding

Salary € *, * pro rata
for 1 year subject to funding.

* To assist in developing appropriate responses in relation to
priority areas identified by the KTA Strategic Plan .
* To assist in planning, developing, and delivering programmes and
activities in response to the issues for young people, their needs
and/or their interests; with specific focus on mental health and
wellbeing
* Identify young people at risk in the community and develop and
implement programmes to meet their needs;
* To assist in building engagement of young people with the local
Traveller community
* To organise & accompany youth on trips and recreational activities
and ensure the safety of young people.
* To collect data, evaluate programmes and compile reports as deemed
necessary by line manager;
* To link with appropriate initiatives in KTA, the county and
region;
* To link local Traveller issues to policy development locally,
regionally, and nationally;
* To represent KTA at meetings, seminars and conferences as required
* Anything else deemed necessary by the Manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will be a vibrant and dynamic person who has
proven capacity in motivating and inspiring team members. They will
have the ability to work under their own direction and as a member of
a team. They will have the following essential and desirable
attributes:

QUALIFICATIONS & KNOWLEDGE

* Youth/Community Development or relevant qualification or working
towards a qualification Essential
* Detailed understanding of the issues and barriers faced by young
Travellers. Essential

EXPERIENCE

* Experience, knowledge and understanding of youth work Desirable
* Experience of report writing including; evaluation reports etc.
Essential
* Experience of working with Traveller Community / in a Traveller
organisation Desirable
* Experience developing and delivering mental health programmes for
young people Desirable

SKILLS AND CAPACITIES

* A demonstrable commitment to human rights and social justice and a
commitment to work from an anti-racist and equality work perspective
